In 1919, Demopolis hosted the great Rooster Auction to raise funds to build a bridge over the Tombigbee River connecting Marengo and Sumter counties, the last link in the Dixie Overland Highway. Thus was erected the infamous Rooster Bridge! The 1919 auction attracted thousands of attendees, and roosters were donated by many famous people including President Woodrow Wilson, Helen Keller, and "Fatty" Arbuckle, to name a few. Join the Marengo County Historical Society on April 13 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 1919 Rooster Auction. Guests can run the Cock’s Crow 5K or 1K, browse arts, crafts, and food while listening to live entertainment, and participate in the Rooster Auction where you can bid on goods and services! There is even an area for children to play! The day events are free, admission is $20 to the auction.
