“This book is distinctive in the canon of Axeman literature…the book reads like a modern-day thriller.”—Lousianna Life

“[The Axeman’s] reign of terror has enjoyed something of a cultural renaissance in recent years… Davis tries to get past the pop-culture phenomenon to learn the facts of the case.”—VICE

About the Book:
The book details the fascinatingly grisly story of America’s first serial killer who stalked the streets of New Orleans from 1910 to 1919. The story has been the subject of much speculation in literature and on the web—and most recently on the FX television series American Horror Story—but the extent of the bloodlust, panic, and deception caused by this string of murders has never been fully explored until now. On a Jack the Ripper-style crime spree that terrorized the city for nearly a decade, the mysterious Axeman repeatedly broke into the homes of Italian grocers in the dead of night, leaving his victims in a pool of blood. Exploring the true story of a killer who sent terror through the heart of Louisiana, Davis reveals new details and evidence on theories that have puzzled Americans for almost a century.

As chilling as it is informative, The Axeman of New Orleans examines a great mystery of the American South.

About the Author:
Miriam C. Davis has a PhD in history and is the author of Dame Kathleen Kenyon, a biography of the most important female archaeologist of the twentieth century. She lectures for Smithsonian Journeys and lives in Montgomery, Alabama.
