Rooster Day

April 9, 2016 @ 9:00 am - 6:30 pm

In 1919, Demopolis hosted the great Rooster Auction to raise funds to build a bridge over the Tombigbee River connecting Marengo and Sumter counties, the last link in the Dixie Overland Highway. Thus was erected the infamous Rooster Bridge! The 1919 auction attracted thousands of attendees, and roosters were donated by many famous people including President Woodrow Wilson, Helen Keller, and “Fatty” Arbuckle, to name a few.
