Beatrice – Pioneer Days

November 6, 2014 - November 7, 2014

Pioneer Days at Rikard’s Mill Historical Park.  $5 each for students.  Teachers & chaperones free.  Rikard’s Mill Park, 5 miles North of Beatrice.  9 am – Noon.

An Interactive Learning Experience Like No Other!  Teachers statewide have been invited to bring their history and social studies classes of all ages to Rikard’s Mill, a restored 1845 grist mill, for a full day of interactive learning. They will have hands-on experience of helping women wash clothes, see yarn being made, basket-making, ride a mule-pulled wagon, play old –timey instruments, walk nature trails, and see many more old fashion activities. Mac, the mule, will be pulling the mill and grinding sugar cane into juice for the cane syrup making process. Eager learners can also watch as water turns stones in the old grist mill to grind fresh cornmeal from corn.  Students are also encouraged to give a hand as candle makers dip wicks into wax to make old-fashioned tapered candles. In addition, a local blacksmith will be in his workshop creating unique pieces from raw metals.  With so much to see and do throughout the day, students will undoubtedly have a one-of-a-kind educational experience.
