Hybart House Museum

The house, known for its Mediterranean Spanish architecture with red tile roof, plaster walls and many porches, was under way in 1925. The rocks for the foundation and columns were hauled by wagon from Limestone Creek.  The living room, with hand-hewn beams from Monroe County walnuts, and the dining room were always in the center with the kitchen and guest quarters at the north end and the family living area at the south end. The Old Court House Museum

The Old Courthouse Museum serves as an important link between the county's colorful past and the events of today.  Located in the Old Monroe County Courthouse on the Monroeville town square, the museum provides a variety of events and activities to attract people of all ages and backgrounds throughout the year.

"Monroeville is best known as the home of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Harper Lee and her childhood friend, Truman Capote.  Each year, in May, a production of ""To Kill A Mockingbird"" is presented at the Old Courthouse Museum by a local amateur group, the Mockingbird Players. [more]

Rikard's Mill Historical Park

An operating water-powered grist mill and museum, Rikard's Mill is nestled in the piney woods along the banks of the picturesque Flat Creek which flows through Monroe County and into the Alabama River.

First built in 1845, the mill has served residents of North Monroe County ever since.  Visitors to the mill can watch as corn is ground into cornmeal and grits.

The museum stages many activities in the park and is dedicated to the preservation of past folk traditions. [more]

Alabama River Museum

Travel back in time 60 million years ago....

The River Museum tour begins with a collection of ancient fossils and Native American artifacts found in Monroe County.  Then, view the exhibit that immortalizes the Steamboat Era, including a miniature replica of the Nettie Quill, a steamboat that traveled the Alabama River.  Fossils displayed are from the Gosport Sand, a layer of Southeast rocks noted for its concentration of fossils. Monroe County Lake

Part of the Piney Woods Birding Trail, the Monroe County Lake provides an excellent opportunity to explore this "under-birded" area. During a relatively short period, one of our resident birders counted 42 species of birds. Common Loon, American White Pelican, Wood Stork, Barn Owl, Osprey, Swallow-tailed Kite and Palm Warblers have all been spoted on or over the lake in the past. [more] 

Burnt Corn Baptist Church

Originally called Bethany Baptist Church, the Burnt Corn Baptist Church was established in 1821 in nearby Conecuh County; it moved in 1846 to Puryearville (Monroe County), just west of Burnt Corn; then, in 1874 the congregation built the present structure.

The history of the Burnt Corn area begins hundreds of years ago.  Since this was part of the Creek Indian Nation, Burnt Corn was probably an Indian village. [more]
