Traveling in Rural Southwest Alabama

The Federal Road

Federal Road, Conecuh County, AlabamaThis trail starts in Milledgeville, Ga, with an off-shoot to Mobile through Conecuh, Clarke and Washington Counties in Alabama and ends in New Orleans.

The Old Federal Road was traveled by all settlers coming out of the original 13 states around 1814 (after the Indian wars).  These settlers wanted to attain land grants in the Mississippi Territory.  The road starts in Milledgeville, GA and makes its way down through Alabama paralleling Highway 84 to Conecuh County.

In Conecuh County this Road was the boundary line for Monroe and Conecuh Counties through the town of Burt Corn, Alabama.  (Part of Burnt Corn is in Conecuh County and in Monroe County)  The famous canoe fight at the battle of Burnt Corn took place in this area.

Through Conecuh County the Road bed closely follows county Road 5 and merges back with Highway 84 and continues westward on through Natchez, MS and ends at New Orleans, LA.  On the Monroe County Side of Burnt Corn there is an old church and an old country store that can be seen while traveling this trek.

For more information on the Federal Road, contact the Monroe County Heritage Museum, Jane Ellen Clarke 251-575-7433.

From I-65 South take exit 96 to AL 83 to Burnt Corn -in Burt Corn Follow County Road 5 this follows the old Federal Road Bed.
