The Birdhouse Trail
Monroeville, “Literary Capital of Alabama”, is also home of Nelle Harper Lee, author of the Pulitzer Prize winning novel, “To Kill A Mockingbird.” As home to Miss Nelle, as she is known locally, Monroeville naturally claims itself “Home of Mockingbird”. In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the publication of “To Kill A Mockingbird” the Monroeville/Monroe County Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring “The Birdhouse Project”, symbolizing the theme “Come Home To Monroeville/Monroe County in 2010”. The goal of the project is to create a “birdhouse trail” of places to visit, and to showcase the talent of Monroe Countians who have designed, constructed and hand-painted the birdhouses which are placed throughout the county.
Birdhouses are constructed of wood, very fitting as Monroe County is one of the most heavily timbered of Alabama’s sixty-seven counties, Birdhouses were designed by Barry McKinley, PTAC Engineering, and built by Hammer, Inc., using materials purchased in Monroe County. All birdhouses have been hand painted by various artists, and are sponsored by businesses, schools and civic organizations. Through a $5,000 grant awarded by Ala-Tom R, C & D Committee, the Chamber of Commerce was able to donate birdhouses to local schools and educational institutions. Learn all about the trail on the Monroeville Birdhouses website.
